The Usual Upgrade Hassels

I upgraded from 2008. As with the last upgrade I found that after doing so and then updating my various banking and investment accounts a number transactions were downloaded which had already been downloaded. It was simply a matter of deleting them but it took time. One of my stored passwords had dissappeared and had to be reentered. The back up to my CD-RW drive will now back up only one time, rather than multiple times, to a CD-RW disc. Unless I can figure it out I’ll probably pay the $9.99 / year and use the online Quicken backup system. Other than that things seem to work the same. I haven’t tried new features. I upgraded to extend the time of support for the product, not because I wanted new features. I gave it three stars instead of five stars becuase of the upgrade hassels, the lack of easy free support, and the general lack of intuitive operation. Still I suspect it is probably one of the best, if not the best, suite around. And it’s easier to stick with what I’ve used for more than ten years than change.

Hard to use. Graphs and Reports are a mess.

I’m yet another weary MS Money Plus user who’s being forced to switch. So I bought Quicken 2010 and tried it out for a few weeks. It’s so bad I’m returning it. I’d rather manually download bank statements into Money (after my “online services” subscription runs out) than try to adapt to Quicken. The worst part of it is the Cash Forecast funtions. They simply don’t work. Transfers don’t show up at all. And you have to jump through hoops every single time you want to see a graph. I spent a fair amount of time working with Quicken’s tech support, and the result was that the software simply isn’t developed to correctly handle basic cash forecast funtions. So for me it just isn’t worth it. Maybe by 2012 or 2013 Quicken will catch up and be creating a product that’s intuitive and functional.

Not what I expected

I have used Quicken for over 10 years and have never been disappointed with the software upgrades until this release. It’s very difficult to rely on options that are no longer available. My most unpleasant surprise was when none of my bill reminders with a category of [xxxx]appeared on the calendar. I use that religiously to keep track of when bills are due. What I discovered is all bill reminders with a category of [xxxx] do not appear on the calendar until they are paid. I contacted Quicken support as was told that it was a known bug and they didn’t have a date when it would be corrected. For now I put the bill reminders in with a category of “Quicken Bug” which shows up on the calendar, then when I pay them I change the category to the account to pay them from – category [xxxx]

Old Money User likes but….

I decided to switch from Microsoft Money due to the fact Microsoft has discontinued it. The conversion from Money to Quicken was loaded with errors; so I decided to download the data from my FI and import it; I found enough errors in that to convince me to start from scratch with a new file. I manually entered my transactions for the current month and will “shadow” by entering the transactions in both programs. This will give me the full FY09 in Money and allow me to fine tune Quicken before discontinuing Money on Jan 1st.

I also found it is not as friendly as Money if you want to track Certificate of Deposits, but I can live with that.

Recommendation: If switching to Quicken from another program, plan on starting from scratch, as the conversions and possibly the imports will likely contain numerous errors.

was only able to install on one computer. with quicken help together we were able to get some kind of rig installed. don’t buy
